On the weekend the long awaited season started, with two 40 over games at Cardiff CC, with the First XIs clashing on Saturday and the Second XIs on Sunday. Both scorecards can be seen on the Play Fair website.
In the former, Cardiff put out a young but very strong side, including the Glamorgan player, Prem Sisodiya; having won the toss they batted. They totalled 231-9 with the aforementioned scoring 59 and their skipper Greg Holmes 45, before being brilliantly caught on the boundary by Chris Van Os. The pick of the bowlers were Dan Rogers with 3-31 and Lewis Devonald 3-42. In reply RCC reached 61-0 off 11 overs with Ben O’Neil and Jonathan Davies, 32 and 23 not out respectively, when the second rain break caused the game to be abandoned.
The following day was the turn of the 2nd XIs. This time RCC won the toss, and put Cardiff in to bat. They totalled 165-9 with the pick of the bowlers being Alex Griffiths, who in his 8 overs took 6-23, a fantastic achievement: Jon Corden chipped in with 2-20. In reply RCC reached the target in 37.4 overs for the loss of 6 wickets to register a brilliant win. The best batters were Alex Bywater with 44, George Duplock 25 and Swagath, who held the latter part of the innings together, with a battling 19no.
It was a most encouraging start and congratulations to Ben Wakeling, the new 2nd XI skipper for his first win. The games now come thick and fast on Wednesday, Friday (the first inter club match up),Saturday and Sunday. The season has taken a while to get going but it was great to be back.
