As I write this Radyr Cricket Club finds itself halfway through the 2017 season. We have enjoyed unprecedented weather for this time of year and to date have only had one game abandoned. All four senior sides are playing a high standard of cricket the first XI placed fifth in the SEWCL 2nd Division and the second XI unbeaten flying high at the top of their respective division.
Our run up to the season welcomed ex Glamorgan and England bowler Simon Jones to the ground to put the bowlers through their paces. Simon has been working with our first XI and the youth through the season to develop their skills. It is a great experience to face Simon in the nets as it’s not every day you get to bat against a Test cricketer especially one that was the scourge of international batsmen the world over!
As we moved into the 2017 season, as with every year, we look to balance the books and finance the club. It is a huge challenge just to maintain our facilities to provide cricket to the community. Two pitches and the three lane permanent net facility take large amounts of time and money to maintain the standards we set ourselves. This is all achieved by our members and volunteers and is a real testament to the club that we can provide cricket for four senior league sides and one Sunday non league side. We must also not forget the cricket we provide for both boys and girls from 5 years upwards, with the most recent addition being an Under 19 T20 team.
We had been looking long and hard for a new shirt sponsor and felt that ‘local’ was the way forward. So it was with great pleasure that Cicchetti of Station Road agreed to partner us for the next three seasons. We would like to thank Paulo and everyone at Cicchetti for this support. Our thanks also extends to the continued support of Radyr Garage as well as new sponsorship from Andrew Cox barbers, Glamorgan Telecom, Thomas H Wood, U Design Ltd and Gwynt y Ddraig. Not all support however amounts to money; a special thanks must go to the Radyr and Morganstown Association in particular Nick Hawkins for loaning us the marquee for our annual Vice Presidents luncheon.
Radyr Cricket Club is a vibrant, family club, proud of its 125 years of history within the local community. It is wonderful to have so much local support in all its guises.
In conclusion if you or any member of your family are interested in playing, scoring, umpiring or even cutting the grass do not hesitate to contact the club via www.radyrcc.co.uk or just pop down to the ground.
