The last month has been action packed for junior cricket at the club and we are once again very close to having 150 children registered with us. Our youngest are from All Stars aged five through to those playing their final year of junior cricket at fifteen. As always it’s great to see familiar faces back with us and ready to enjoy another season of cricket but we are also delighted to welcome new players who have been attracted to the club through various routes. These include taster sessions at local primary schools, leaflet drops at Tongwynlais, Danescourt, Ysgol Pencae, Cathedral and Howells schools as well as many players who have recommended our wonderful club to their friends.
Training sessions have been running since the end of April with only a few falling victim to the weather which is always a bonus. League fixtures have been happening over the last couple of weeks and we have had our fair share of wins and losses but above all we are seeing players out having fun and enjoying the wonderful game of cricket. As well as league games our U13s and U15s have participated in the first rounds of the ECB and Welsh cup competitions. Unfortunately our U13s haven’t made it through to round two but our U15s are set to play the next round of both competitions by mid-June, good luck from us all. A group of our female players will be participating in the U13 Lady Taverners competition where they are due to face Briton Ferry on Friday 1st June.
In addition to all this we have also found time to run taster sessions with our local Rainbow and Brownies groups. The sessions have seen over fifty girls come to the club and try out cricket, we know from experience that this has been a great way to attract girls to join the club and we are delighted that this year’s sessions have again proved successful with a handful of players already signed up as a result.
As always we are indebted to all the coaches, coach support workers and age group co-ordinators who give freely of their time to make sure all of members have the opportunity to train and play games throughout the season. Here is to a flaming June filled with sunshine and cricket for all.
